BioShock Infinite
Rails hang above the flying city of Columbia in 1912, and in the shooter BioShock Infinite Booker DeWitt fights while riding them. Elizabeth is at his side the whole time, and you never need to protect her. She tosses Booker ammo, health and money herself and opens Tears, pulling items and chunks of scenery into the fight.

That was Ken Levine's plan. He wanted a companion like Alyx Vance in Half-Life 2, not an escort mission. At first Elizabeth was more of a useful helper, but players warmed to her at E3 2011, and Irrational made her a full partner.
Elizabeth's face went to a Russian woman. In December 2012 the studio hired cosplayer Anna Moleva, whose take on the character was so accurate that she became its official face in ads and on the box. The in-game model was then slightly reworked to resemble her.
Critics praised the story, Columbia and Elizabeth, but the combat split opinion. Some reviewers found it repetitive and the two-gun limit too tight. Players give it 93% positive across 109,986 reviews, and critics 94 on Metacritic. In our Recommended Score it ranks 20 of 4,736 games.
Enjoyed it? Try Half-Life 2, where that very Alyx Vance fights beside Gordon Freeman, and BioShock, the first game in the series, which takes you to the underwater city of Rapture in 1960.
