Walls don't last long here. Thanks to the Havok physics engine, grenades, satchel charges and mortars knock houses apart piece by piece, tanks crash through fences, and engineers can blow up bridges. In May 2007 a patch made it the first commercial game to support DirectX 10.
It took more than three years to make, with over a hundred people at the peak. PC Gamer named it Game of the Year for 2006, and the D.I.C.E. Awards called it Strategy Game of the Year.
One reviewer did miss an Axis campaign, found the AI rather dim, and felt the game at times looked like a reskinned Dawn of War, Relic's 2004 strategy game. Critics give it 93 on Metacritic, and players leave 94% positive reviews out of 12,753. In our Recommended Score it ranks 75 of 4,736 games.
Enjoyed it? Try Company of Heroes 2, where the series moves to the Eastern Front, mostly on the Red Army's side, and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Anniversary Edition (Classic), that very Relic strategy game.
