There are three heroes, and each mission gives you one. Nero fights with Devil Breakers, robotic arms that hit hard but break if you misuse them. Dante switches between four combat styles. Newcomer V barely fights himself: three demons do the work, and he finishes enemies off with his cane.
Director Hideaki Itsuno has led the series since the second game, and with the fifth he wanted to make the best work of his career. Newcomers got an Auto mode with simpler combos, while the high skill ceiling, in Itsuno's view, should appeal to veterans.
From April to June 2025, riding the Netflix anime series, the six-year-old game became Capcom's best seller of the quarter, ahead of Monster Hunter Wilds too. Total sales are past 14 million, a series record.
Critics praised the gameplay, especially the variety of techniques the three heroes bring. One reviewer disliked switching between heroes, and another found the ending rushed. On Steam 96% of 120,392 reviews are positive, and Metacritic shows 89. In our Recommended Score it ranks #66 of 4,736.
Liked it? Try Devil May Cry 3, a prequel about a young Dante and his twin brother, and Bayonetta, where a witch fights with guns and her own hair.
