It is the first time the series starts before the catastrophe, and the idea was an old one. Todd Howard wanted to show the world before the bombs back in 2009, when the first plans for the game took shape. But the studio was busy with Skyrim, and Fallout 4 only went into full production in mid-2013.
There is plenty that is new for the series. The hero is fully voiced for the first time, you can build settlements in the ruins with electricity, crop patches and turrets, and the shooting was tuned with help from id Software, the makers of DOOM.
IGN praised the world, exploration and crafting, and GameSpot the creation tools and the amount of content. As for dialogue, Howard himself said in 2016 that some of what they did there didn't work as well. Critics give it 84 on Metacritic, and players leave 81% positive reviews out of 292,022. In our Recommended Score it ranks 292 of 4,736 games.
Enjoyed it? Try Fallout: New Vegas, where dialogue branches and your answers shape your reputation with factions, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the game Bethesda built the same engine for.
