In MapleStory you jump across platforms alongside other players: it is a 2D side-scrolling online role-playing game. Korean studio Wizet made it in 2003, and it arrived on Steam in 2012 as a free game with a shop where real money bought outfits and boosts.

Fighting is only part of life here. Players form parties and guilds, trade, play Gomoku and even get married, and the game recognises the couple. There is also a popularity stat that others can raise or lower for you.
Since 2003 the game has been reworked more than once. The 2010 Big Bang update changed its core code. In December 2015 the North American version opened the Reboot world, with no trading, more money from monsters and gear that drops for your class.
By 2020 more than 180 million players had registered, and the game's revenue had passed three billion dollars.
One guide for parents warned that buying items for real money easily turns into a never-ending cycle. On Steam it has 60% positive out of 16,285 reviews. By our Recommended Score it is #4,435 of 4,736 games.
