The game paid for itself on pre-orders alone, and it kept growing for years. Over seventy DLC packs came out, including ones with John Wick and Hotline Miami.

For years the developers insisted there would be no microtransactions, yet in October 2015 safes of weapon skins arrived, some of them changing weapon stats, and only paid drills could open them. After the uproar, drills also started dropping in play, and in 2016 Starbreeze bought the rights to the series and promised that future safes would open for free.

In December 2018, during Starbreeze's money troubles, new content stopped, and it returned in October 2019. The game has sold over 40 million copies.

Reviewers praised the co-op and came down hard on the AI teammates, and one disliked the stealth. So round up a real crew. Players leave 89% positive of 445,965 reviews, and critics give it 79 on Metacritic. In our Recommended Score it ranks #454 of 4,736 games.
