The first game, a 2D one, was started by two students at the University of Washington. The sequel moved to 3D partly because of fan art that showed every collected item on the character, and 2D simply had no room for that.
The game entered early access on March 27, 2019 with a buy one, get one free deal. It sold over a million copies within a month.
Gearbox bought the rights to the series in 2022, and in 2024 the founders of Hopoo Games left for Valve. The Seekers of the Storm expansion in August 2024 drew complaints about bugs, with some abilities depending on frame rate. Players leave 93% positive out of 242,716 reviews, and critics give it 85 on Metacritic. By our Recommended Score it is #177 of 4,736 games.
