It was Psyonix's second try. In 2008 the studio put out Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars on PlayStation 3. It was downloaded more than two million times but never counted as a success, and the studio's founder later called it too hardcore.
The new game took about two years and under two million dollars, and its pace was slowed down to make it easier to get into. In July 2015 PlayStation Plus subscribers got it free, and at The Game Awards 2015 it won Best Independent Game and Best Sports/Racing Game. On September 23, 2020, it went free to play for everyone.
Reviewers praised the online play. One found the ball "floaty", while another liked the very contrast between fast cars and an unhurried ball. Players leave 88% positive across 431,826 reviews, and critics give it 86 on Metacritic. On our Recommended Score Rocket League sits at #237 of 4,736 games.
