Rare drew on players of EVE Online, DayZ and Rust, who make up their own stories. The studio's pirates owe a lot to Pirates of the Caribbean and The Goonies. Progression only unlocks cosmetics, so newcomers and veterans can sail together.
At its 2018 launch critics praised the ship combat, physics and visuals but faulted the progression and the lack of content. Producer Joe Neate says the team ripped up its roadmap and added the Megalodon and AI ships. The updates kept coming, and the game's reception improved.
In April 2024 Sea of Thieves became Rare's first game on PlayStation, and in May it topped the PlayStation Store PS5 chart in the US, Canada and Europe. It has drawn more than 40 million players. On Steam it has 88% positive out of 323,235 reviews; critics give it 69 on OpenCritic. By our Recommended Score it is #2,641 of 4,736 games.
