In the RPG Undertale a child falls into an underground world of monsters, and a fight with them can end in peace. Attacks come as swarms of bullets, and you steer a small heart out of the way. On your turn you can strike, run or make friends, and you can finish the whole game without killing anyone.

Your choices decide the ending, and the game's memory lasts longer than one playthrough. Next time, the dialogue changes based on what you did before, and the route with no mercy permanently alters even the most peaceful ending.

Toby Fox asked for 5,000 dollars on Kickstarter, and 2,398 people gave him 51,124. Fox wrote the script and all the music himself, while artist Temmie Chang drew most of the sprites. He drew on the Mother series, which he was already making EarthBound hacks of in high school, and took talking to monsters from Shin Megami Tensei.

Critics met it with universal acclaim, while the visuals got a mixed reaction, ugly to some and just right to others. Players leave 96% positive out of 313,088 reviews, critics give it 92 on Metacritic. By our Recommended Score it is #11 of 4,736 games.

Liked it? Try DELTARUNE, Fox's parallel story for people who have already finished Undertale, OMORI, a psychological horror game about a boy caught between a real town and a dream world, and OneShot, where the game reaches into your computer.
