VRChat started in January 2014 as a program for the Oculus Rift DK1 prototype headset. Graham Gaylor and Jesse Joudrey created it, and on February 1, 2017 it entered Steam early access.
Dancers with full-body tracking have given performances and classes here, from ballet to breaking. The company Hikky has run a series of Vket fairs in VRChat, where community members sell digital goods, and Bandai Namco and Disney have had booths there. In February 2026 a concert premiere held as part of the Sanrio VFes festival helped set a record of around 156,700 people at once.
VRChat has also had a clash with its players. In July 2022 the developers announced Easy Anti-Cheat to block banned client modifications, and the game was flooded with negative reviews on Steam. Players leave 73% positive out of 274,573 reviews. By our Recommended Score it is #4,363 of 4,736 games.
