The world comes from Mike Pondsmith's tabletop RPG Cyberpunk, and Pondsmith himself consulted on the game. One of the central characters, Johnny Silverhand, is voiced by Keanu Reeves.
Then the December 2020 launch turned into a disaster. Bugs and poor performance hit the PS4 and Xbox One versions hardest, Sony pulled the game from the PlayStation Store, and it only came back in June 2021.
What followed were years of fixing. In January 2023 Steam users voted it the Labor of Love award, given for support after release. In September 2023 the free 2.0 update rebuilt the skills and the police and added vehicle combat, and the paid expansion Phantom Liberty followed right after.
Reviewers praised the story and the side quests. Players leave 87% positive out of 902,779 reviews; critics give it 86 on Metacritic. By our Recommended Score it is #246 of 4,736 games.
