Ghost Ship Games was founded in spring 2016 by five former employees of the closed studio Press Play. The team drew on Minecraft and Left 4 Dead, but felt that in Left 4 Dead newcomers are at a disadvantage playing with veterans, and here the goal was to put everyone on even footing regardless of experience. The game spent two years in early access and fully launched in May 2020. By January 2024 it had sold over 8 million copies.
Reviewers praised the classes and the atmosphere. One IGN reviewer ran into connection trouble: in roughly one mission out of five, other players lagged badly and dropped. Players give it 97% positive across 304,372 reviews, critics 85 on Metacritic. In our Recommended Score it ranks 156 of 4,736 games.
