Dishonored
Killing in Dishonored is an option, never a requirement. You play the Empress's former bodyguard, framed for her murder and out for revenge in Dunwall, a plague-ridden city. You have a blade, gadgets and supernatural powers such as a short-range teleport, and you can finish the whole game without killing anyone, mission targets included. Violence builds up "chaos", which changes the story, the city and the ending.

Dunwall took a while to appear. The game was first set in medieval Japan, but the idea was dropped early: it would have been hard to market, and nobody on the team really knew the culture. The story then moved to London in 1666. What shipped is a fictional city inspired by London and Edinburgh of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Critics praised the freedom in missions and the art direction. Some reviewers disliked the ending, with generic last missions and an abrupt finale. In March 2013 BAFTA named Dishonored Best Game. Players leave 97% positive out of 68,062 reviews; critics give it 91 on Metacritic. By our Recommended Score it is #40 of 4,736 games.
Liked it? Try Dishonored 2, set fifteen years later, where you play either the deposed Empress or her father, and DEATHLOOP, where an assassin has to kill eight targets before midnight to break out of a time loop.
