The game was announced under someone else's name. In December 2012 a trailer for The Phantom Pain came out from a Swedish outfit called Moby Dick Studio, supposedly led by a Joakim, a name that turned out to be an anagram of Kojima. In spring 2013 an actor playing the bandaged “studio head” got nervous when the host spotted the Fox Engine logo in the screenshots. Soon after, Kojima admitted it was a way to see how people took his engine without the Metal Gear name.
It was his last game at Konami: in March 2015 it announced it was parting ways with Kojima and took his name off the cover.
Critics praised the systems, while the story split them. Reviewers disliked having to replay old missions on a higher difficulty to reach the final ones, and the cut Episode 51 only survived as a video in the Collector's Edition. Players give it 91% positive across 73,693 reviews, critics 91 on Metacritic. In our Recommended Score it ranks 56 of 4,736 games.
