The world is four times the size of the first game's, and it does not hand out shortcuts. You can teleport to special crystals, but only by spending rare stones, while an oxcart on the road can be blocked by goblins and smashed by a griffin. Director Hideaki Itsuno put it simply: travel is only boring when the game itself is.
The team wanted to bring back what the first game's technology would not allow. A world where events arise on their own was built with Grand Theft Auto V in mind.
Critics praised the lively world and the pawn system, and faulted the performance, the limited enemy variety and weak ally AI. On Steam the launch reviews were mixed over microtransactions and optimization. Critics give it 88 on Metacritic, and players leave 64% positive out of 78,936 reviews. In our Recommended Score it ranks 424 of 4,736 games.
