The engineer in Factorio has crash-landed on an alien planet and has to build a rocket. To get there you gather resources and craft machines, and the machines take over mining, transport and assembly until the factory runs without you.

The factory pollutes, and that angers the local wildlife. The more smog, the more aggressive they get, and they evolve over time. If you'd rather not fight, you can pick peaceful mode at the start.

Lead designer Michal Kovařík took inspiration from Minecraft mods. Version 1.0 was set for September 25, 2020. Cyberpunk 2077 was then scheduled for September 17, and Wube released Factorio on August 14 rather than launch next to it. Cyberpunk ended up shipping only in December.

There is even a scorpion from Somalia named after the game, Neobuthus factorio. It was described by a team that included Michal's father, František Kovařík.

The graphics are simple, but it is so hard to stop playing that people nicknamed it Cracktorio. Players give it 97% positive across 193,511 reviews, critics 90 on Metacritic. In our Recommended Score it ranks 354 of 4,736 games.

Enjoyed it? Try Satisfactory, where you build a factory on an alien planet to feed a space elevator for a megacorp, and Dyson Sphere Program, where your network of factories spreads across the stars toward a Dyson sphere.
