After Grand Theft Auto III came out on PC, the team discussed a mission pack for it, which grew into a game of its own. Rockstar North's core team of 50 people made it in eighteen months, with Scarface and the series Miami Vice as touchstones.
Unlike the silent hero of GTA III, this one talks, in the voice of Ray Liotta. There are four times as many lines of dialogue as in GTA III and nine hours of music, with licensed 1980s songs on the radio.
It sold 1.4 million copies in two days, faster than any game before it. In Grand Theft Auto VI, Rockstar returns to a new Vice City.
The PC version came out in May 2003. Most reviewers praised mouse aiming, while many criticised the new driving controls. Players leave 92% positive out of 29,819 reviews, critics give it 94 on Metacritic. By our Recommended Score it is #43 of 4,736 games.
