It was made by Tango Gameworks, until then known for the horror game The Evil Within. It was such a departure for the studio that development was kept secret. On January 25, 2023, the game was shown at the Xbox and Bethesda Developer Direct and released the same day.
The game uses ten licensed tracks, from Nine Inch Nails to The Prodigy, and in December 2023 it won Best Audio Design at The Game Awards.
None of that saved the studio. In May 2024 Microsoft announced it was closing Tango Gameworks, and in August KRAFTON bought the studio along with the rights to Hi-Fi RUSH.
Critics praised the style, the humor and the combat, though some complained about repetition, level design and a short song list. Players leave 97% positive out of 27,598 reviews, and critics give it 90 on Metacritic. By our Recommended Score it is #105 of 4,736 games.
