The game was announced in September 2012 and only reached early access in March 2020. At that point it was the biggest Steam launch of the year. The full version followed in October 2022.
The story is set 173 years before Mount & Blade: Warband, as the Calradic Empire falls apart. Its decline is modeled on the fall of Rome during the Migration Period.
Your hero can marry and have children. If he dies, one of them inherits the army and the fiefs, and the campaign carries on with the heir.
In early access, several reviewers called it janky and unfinished yet said they loved it anyway. After the full release, critics praised the combat and visuals but called kingdom management and diplomacy shallow. Players give it 87% positive across 232,703 reviews, critics 77 on Metacritic. In our Recommended Score it ranks 800 of 4,736 games.
Enjoyed it? Try Mount & Blade: Warband, where you can found your own kingdom in the same Calradia, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, set in Bohemia in 1403 with a focus on period accuracy, and Crusader Kings III, where you rule a dynasty generation after generation.
