It all started with an aquarium. George Fan at PopCap was planning a follow-up to his Insaniquarium in which aliens would attack a fish tank. After playing tower defense mods for Warcraft III, he decided plants would make good defenses. The aliens became zombies once Fan drew what he considered the perfect zombie.
For most of development the game was called Lawn of the Dead, after George Romero's Dawn of the Dead. Fan even sent Romero a video of himself in a zombie costume trying to write code. The name was still refused.
Reviewers praised the humor, the art and the music, though one warned that tower defense veterans would wait a long time for a real challenge. Critics give it 87 on Metacritic; players leave 97% positive out of 144,702 reviews. By our Recommended Score it is #85 of 4,736 games.
