PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS
Up to a hundred players parachute onto an island, search houses for guns and shoot it out while a blue wall shrinks the map. That is every match of PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, played until one survivor is left. The skydive from a plane at the start was new to the genre.

PUBG grew out of mods. Brendan Greene, better known as PlayerUnknown, made the ARMA 2 mod DayZ: Battle Royale. The game itself took its cue from the 2000 Japanese film Battle Royale, and Greene brought the winner's line, Winner winner chicken dinner, over from his earlier games.
It entered early access in March 2017 and, before its full release that December, won Best Multiplayer Game at The Game Awards. On 13 January 2018 Guinness recorded a peak of 3,257,248 people playing it on Steam at once.
At launch critics praised it despite its technical flaws, and in August 2018 the studio itself admitted to bugs and performance problems with a campaign called Fix PUBG. In January 2022 the game went free to play. Players leave 60% positive out of 2,747,283 reviews. By our Recommended Score it is #3,670 of 4,736 games.
Liked it? Try Apex Legends, where squads of three play heroes with their own abilities, and The Culling, which its makers meant as the first standalone battle royale on Steam, for sixteen players.
