Squads of three Legends, each with their own abilities, fight in Apex Legends to be the last ones standing. There was no announcement beforehand. Respawn simply released it on 4 February 2019, and for free.

The world comes from Titanfall, but the studio pitched Apex as a new game. In its first week 25 million people played it, and 50 million in its first month.

Pings let you show your squad a direction, a weapon or an enemy. One reviewer said they made voice chat with strangers largely unnecessary, and Fortnite added a similar system on 28 February 2019, less than a month after Apex came out.

It has had its scandals. In August 2019 the Iron Crown event caused an outcry over loot boxes, and Respawn apologized for unfair monetization. In July 2021 hackers replaced in-game messages with a link to a site complaining that the Titanfall servers were left open to attacks.

In 2020 Apex won the BAFTA for Multiplayer. Critics give it 88 on Metacritic, and players rate it 67% positive across 1,076,925 reviews. On our Recommended Score it ranks 556 of 4,736 games.

Enjoyed it? Try PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, credited with making battle royale popular, and THE FINALS, where teams fight in a fictional game show on arenas that can be torn down completely.
