The series grew out of a free mod for Quake, yet at E3 1999 Team Fortress 2: Brotherhood of Arms was shown as a take on modern warfare. The realism clashed with the gameplay, so it was dropped.
Then Valve went quiet for six years, and the game kept showing up on Wired News's yearly list of vaporware. It finally came out on October 10, 2007, in The Orange Box.
In 2010 the Mann-Conomy update added an item store, and on June 23, 2011 the game became free to play.
Critics praised the style, the humor and the characters in a game with no single-player campaign. From 2020 to 2024 bots flooded casual servers, and after player protests Valve rolled out waves of bans. Players leave 91% positive out of 1,256,900 reviews; critics give it 92 on Metacritic. By our Recommended Score it is #196 of 4,736 games.
