The game's roots are in science fiction. In 2012 Hi-Rez announced it as Global Agenda 2, a sequel to its own 2010 team shooter. Later the setting switched to fantasy. According to Hi-Rez COO Todd Harris, most of its roughly 85 combat abilities came over from Global Agenda.
According to the developers, Blizzard revealed Overwatch before they could show the game. They feared the comparisons, but internal testing suggested players liked it as it was, so it stayed. The clone label stuck anyway.
IGN praised its room for experimentation, while a Pocket Gamer reviewer felt it never committed to its own ideas. In February 2025, after layoffs at Hi-Rez, no further major updates were planned, and the servers were to stay available for the foreseeable future. Players leave 85% positive out of 345,282 reviews, critics give it 83 on Metacritic. By our Recommended Score it is #898 of 4,736 games.
Liked it? Next, try Team Fortress 2, the game Hi-Rez gives the most credit for the genre, and Marvel Rivals, where Marvel heroes fight six on six and borrow each other's abilities.
