Resident Evil 4
The Resident Evil 4 remake sends Leon Kennedy to a remote Spanish village after the US president's kidnapped daughter. A parasite controls the villagers, and they serve a cult. You shoot over the shoulder as in the 2005 original, but now on the move, and your knife can parry a blow.

Shinji Mikami, who directed the original, says he wrote its scenario in a rush, in about two weeks. After playing the remake, he praised the team for fleshing that scenario out and improving it.
The developers wanted Ashley to come across more as a partner than a damsel in distress. Her health bar is gone, and when she is badly hurt you revive her instead of the game ending on the spot.
Critics welcomed the remake almost unanimously. Still, one reviewer felt the best moment is the first walk into the village and the game never climbs that high again, and another found most bosses easy. Players leave 97% positive out of 194,221 reviews; critics give it 91 on Metacritic. By our Recommended Score it is #21 of 4,736 games.
The remake has sold over 10 million copies. Liked it? Try Resident Evil 2, the same team's previous remake, where Mr. X stalks you through a police station, and Resident Evil Village, where Ethan Winters hunts for his kidnapped daughter in another European village, this time in first person.
