The engine made it to television before the game made it to shops. On BBC Two's Time Commanders, people with no gaming background led ancient armies to replay the great battles of antiquity. Military historians tuned the engine for the TV shows.
Formation and terrain decide a fight. A spear phalanx and the Roman testudo trade speed for protection, and a unit whose morale breaks flees the field.
The collection also includes the Barbarian Invasion expansion, about the empire's decline from 363 to 476 AD, where you can play as the barbarian peoples.
Fans later released mods such as Europa Barbarorum to make it more historically accurate. Critics give it 92 on Metacritic; players leave 94% positive out of 13,115 reviews. By our Recommended Score it is #88 of 4,736 games.
Liked it? Try Total War: ROME II, the direct sequel, and Total War: ATTILA, where the campaign opens in 395 AD during the Migration Period and Attila himself arrives partway through.
