At the start of early access there were five heroes. Three came back from the first game, and two were new: a lich with a skeleton hand at its side, and a cosmic being who gets a second resource, stars, on top of energy. Up to four can play together.
The sequel was started in Unity. When Unity announced a new fee for developers in 2023, Mega Crit moved to Godot and ported about two years of work.
The game entered early access on 5 March 2026, and the studio says it sold more than 3 million copies in the first week. In March a beta patch cut down infinite card combos, and about 10,000 negative Steam reviews appeared in a single day. Some changes were later rolled back, and Mega Crit called that balance pass the first of many over the next year or two. Players leave 61% positive out of 189,258 reviews. By our Recommended Score it is #3,622 of 4,736 games.
Liked it? Start with Slay the Spire, the first game, which Mega Crit built by mixing a roguelike with deck-building board games like Dominion, and try Balatro, where you score with poker hands.
