The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl started the first The Binding of Isaac at a weeklong game jam in 2011. The Flash prototype came together that week, and finishing the game took about three more months. Then Flash got cramped, and a second expansion had to be dropped.
That is when Nicalis offered to bring the game to consoles. McMillen's terms: rebuild it outside Flash, add content and fix the bugs. The result was Rebirth, with 16-bit art in place of the vector graphics.
The 2021 expansion Repentance took in most of the fan mod Antibirth. It also added four-player couch co-op.
Reviewers praised how much better it is than the original, though some objected to its graphic imagery. Players leave 96% positive across 424,920 reviews, and critics give it 86 on Metacritic. By our Recommended Score it is #175 of 4,736 games.
Liked it? Try The Binding of Isaac, the Flash original itself, and Nuclear Throne, a top-down roguelike shooter about mutants in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
