Its creator, Nelson Sexton from Calgary, Canada, has been making games since he was nine. He started out in Roblox, where one of his first games was Deadzone, another zombie survival game. When Unturned came out free in Steam early access in July 2014, he was sixteen.
By mid-2014 it was among the most popular games on Steam. Some of the press was surprised, since it was mainly the work of one person without a big studio's resources.
Players add their own items and vehicles through the Steam Workshop, and the best community maps get built into the game itself. In January 2023 Unturned set its concurrent player record, 112,648 people at once.
One reviewer in 2014 found few ideas of its own here, though he recommended this simple, accessible survival game to anyone who can live with the modest production values. Players leave 91% positive out of 565,078 reviews. By our Recommended Score it is #950 of 4,736 games.
