In 2000 Digital Extremes announced Dark Sector, an online game about a bounty hunter. What came out in 2008 was very different from that plan, and in 2012 the studio decided to go back to the idea and make it free.
At GDC 2012 publishers were not interested. Western ones disliked the science fiction setting, and a Korean one predicted failure. So Digital Extremes released the game itself, for free, as an open beta in March 2013. By 2019 Warframe had nearly 50 million registered players.
For years the game kept growing through big updates, from the first open area, Plains of Eidolon, in 2017 to the alternate-history expansion 1999 in 2024. In 2018 one reviewer compared this growth to a mutant science experiment, with systems not always stitched together neatly.
According to the studio, some newcomers, put off by the sheer number of systems, dropped out after a few hours. Players leave 87% positive out of 682,264 reviews, critics give it 69 on Metacritic. By our Recommended Score it is #1,496 of 4,736 games.
