Once a year the Paintress paints a number on her monolith, and everyone who has outgrown it turns to smoke. The number drops each year, and the next one is 33. Expedition 33 sets out to destroy her.
The game began in 2019 as a side project of Guillaume Broche, then a Ubisoft employee, inspired by Final Fantasy. In 2020 Broche left Ubisoft and founded Sandfall Interactive with two partners. Once a publisher came on board, the studio grew to about thirty developers.
The game came out in April 2025, and at The Game Awards 2025 it took nine awards, Game of the Year among them. That set a record for the show, beating the seven awards of The Last of Us Part II. It has sold more than 8 million copies.
One reviewer found that the side quests can overlevel your party, and then the bosses go down easier. Players leave 95% positive out of 184,057 reviews, critics give it 91 on Metacritic. By our Recommended Score it is #31 of 4,736 games.
