The enemy was chosen to fit the engine. Saber Interactive had been steering crowds since World War Z, where hordes of zombies ran at the players. According to its chief creative officer Tim Willits, the same Swarm Engine was a great fit for a Tyranid swarm, so the choice made itself. Even before launch, the game promised to pit you against thousands of Tyranids.
The campaign works for three players, and without friends the AI runs your squadmates. More than two million people played on launch day, and by October 16, 2024 the game had sold 4.5 million copies.
One reviewer liked the fighting more than the missions, which he described as open rooms and hallways filling with waves of enemies, and found the separate co-op mode more of the same. Critics give it 82 on Metacritic, and players leave 84% positive out of 174,096 reviews. In our Recommended Score it ranks 480 of 4,736 games.
