Battlefield 2042
On PC and new consoles, Battlefield 2042 holds up to 128 players, and tornadoes and sandstorms sweep across the maps. DICE replaced the familiar four classes with specialists, characters with their own abilities, such as a wingsuit or a healing pistol. There is no single-player campaign at all.

Two reviewers praised Portal. It lets you build your own matches on maps from older entries, from Battlefield 1942 to Battlefield 3, and tweak even health, loadouts and movement. For one of them, Portal was exactly what showed how far the new game falls short of the series' past.
Players took it far worse than critics did. By November 21, 2021 it had almost 30,000 negative reviews on Steam, and in February 2022 a petition asking for refunds for every buyer passed 200,000 signatures.
An April 2022 update brought more than 400 changes, and on January 31, 2023 the old four-class system came back. In April 2024 the studio announced that Season 7 would be the last.
If every soldier's contribution matters to you, note that one reviewer found the 128-player battles too chaotic. Players leave 49% positive out of 260,514 reviews, and critics give it 68 on Metacritic. By our Recommended Score it is #4,267 of 4,736 games.
Liked it? Try Battlefield: Bad Company 2, whose maps also returned in Portal, and Battlefield 6, with the same four classes.
