Don't Starve Together

At first Klei did not want multiplayer at all. The game was designed for one player, networking would have meant overhauling the whole codebase, and the studio was not sure co-op would even work. It changed its mind after players kept asking. In May 2014 Klei announced a free multiplayer expansion, in December it opened in Steam Early Access, and in April 2016 Together came out in full.

Over time it became a separate game. The original's expansions do not work with it, but it gained characters of its own that the single-player game never had. On 21 June 2026, ten years after release, more than 122,000 people were playing Together at once, setting a new Steam record for the game.

One reviewer felt Together did little to fix the original's problems, but said that taming the wilds with friends is a lot of fun. Players leave 94% positive out of 378,379 reviews, critics give it 83 on Metacritic. By our Recommended Score it is #727 of 4,736 games.
