Early access opened on 19 January 2024, and it sold eight million copies in six days. On 24 January more than two million people were playing at once on Steam, the first game to do that since PUBG: Battlegrounds.
The game comes from Pocketpair, a Tokyo studio. According to the studio head, the creatures were mostly designed by one person hired in 2021.
In September 2024 Nintendo and The Pokémon Company sued Pocketpair in Tokyo for patent infringement, and the studio began changing its mechanics. A November 2024 patch removed summoning creatures by throwing a sphere, and in May 2025 gliding moved from the creatures to a glider.
In July 2026 Palworld left early access with version 1.0, adding 72 new creatures and an archipelago of floating islands. Reviews of the 2024 early access were mixed: critics praised the combat, while some disliked the unoriginal creature designs. Players leave 94% positive out of 417,602 reviews, critics give it 79 on Metacritic. By our Recommended Score it is #433 of 4,736 games.
