The writers drew on films like Boyz n the Hood, and the story also takes in the 1992 Los Angeles riots.
A loud scandal followed the PC release. A sex scene was cut from the game but left in the code, and in June 2005 a modder unlocked it with the Hot Coffee patch. The game was re-rated Adults Only, and a class action let buyers claim up to 35 dollars. Fewer than three thousand people filed.
San Andreas became the best-selling PlayStation 2 game, with over 17 million copies by 2009. One reviewer tired of long drives and replays after failing. Players leave 92% positive of 83,368 reviews, and critics give it 93 on Metacritic. In our Recommended Score it ranks #37 of 4,736 games.
