The game started out as co-op. In 2014 Crytek USA, which had hired many former employees of Vigil Games, the Darksiders studio, announced Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age for four players. That same year development moved to Germany, and in 2017 Hunt returned as a competitive game.

In August 2024 Crytek upgraded the engine, added a new mountain map and renamed the game Hunt: Showdown 1896. Players met the new interface and stuttering with a wave of negative reviews.
At its 2019 release critics praised the hunting loop itself, though one reviewer found that with few maps and guns the game grew repetitive. Players leave 74% positive out of 214,579 reviews, and critics give it 80 on Metacritic. In our Recommended Score it ranks 3,168 of 4,736 games.
